Seed Production Under Irrigation

Kielder Agro Group Tanzania, a joint venture between Kielder Agro Group SA and SeedLand Ltd., is developing a 3,880-hectare farm in Katavi Region, to address Tanzania’s seed shortage. The project focuses on irrigated maize and sunflower seed production across 1,800 hectares, using gravity-fed and pivot irrigation systems, with sustainable crop rotation that includes soy, beans, and green manure to enhance soil health.

Infrastructure development includes 200 ha of T-L pivots by 2026, alongside renewable energy initiatives such as hydroelectric power for on-site nitrogen production. Regenerative practices—biochar, strip-tillage, cover crops, and rotational grazing—support long-term land restoration. The project aims to integrate local farmers, create rural jobs, and expand seed multiplication, directly supporting Tanzania’s food security and reduction of seed and vegetable oil imports, with strong government backing.
